With all of that being said, we need to learn to unplug and experience life outside of the virtual worlds that we inhabit. Now a days, part of our egos are defined by our digital presence, our digital "faces" as I like to call them. But the best moments in our lives are, of course, created outside of our social profiles...they are defined by our in-person interactions that make snapshots of these memorable moments on Instagram even possible. Some of my favorite things require no computer, phone or tablet at all. I'm sure you feel the same. Here are some ways we can work together to unplug:
1. Write a letter
So often we communicate with the ones we love through text messages, emails, Facebook messages, etc. Even my little cousins are on Instagram! These social channels provide a great way to stay in touch and keep track of everyone's lives but its important to stay connected outside of these platforms. I love to write letters, even if it's a simple sticky note that I'm running out of the house to get dog food!
2. Get outside
Even if it's a climb in your local park. Getting out of the house or your office and exploring nature stimulates your senses and clears your mind of the daily stressors.
3. Make something
Maybe it's drawing a picture or framing a print. Lately, I've been obsessed with keeping an old-school birthday book. I didn't make the book, of course. But I bought a cute book (this one because I'm so into anchors -- and right now you can use the code GOSEMIANNUAL to get 33% off) and write my friends' and family members' birthdays in there. I may use Facebook to source the birthdays, but the point of this is to ultimately have a place to go to away from social channels that helps me remember these important dates.
4. Take time to have a meaningful, offline conversation
...even if its with your barista at your local coffee shop. You'd be surprised how a brief catch-up can enhance your mood and brighten your day.
5. Engage in a hobby
...and make sure it's an offline one. Whatever it is you love to do - yoga, acting, golf, you name it - keep doing it.
Maybe you feel like you don't have enough funds to get out of the country. That's fine. Plan a weekend trip. Rent a car. Do whatever you have to do to immerse yourself in a new environment.
