Yesterday, we talked about the medicinal power of mushrooms, specifically extracts of the Chaga mushroom.

Today, we will explore another powerhouse mushroom known for its healing benefits: Reishi.

Used in traditional Chinese medicine, Reishi, of the Lingzhi family , is considered the "mushroom of immortality." With different Lingzhi varietals defined by color and used in China for over 2,000 years, red reishi, or Ganoderma lingzhi, is the most common type sold in Chinese herbal shops today. Like Chaga, Reishi has began to appear in supplements and as alternative medicine in the United States. Unlike Chaga, Reishi is extremely rare.

Mushrooms have been used and consumed for an array of health benefits since, arguably, the beginning of time. However, extraction of the beneficial properties of mushrooms were not identified until the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming in 1928. Since then a range of medicinal fungi - more commonly called medicinal mushrooms - have been touted for their health benefits. Specifically, mushroom's biologically active molecules have been synthesized for use  in a wide range of clinical therapies, to include antibiotics, fungicides, anti-cancer drugs & cholesterol inhibitors

While medicinal mushrooms can include "magic mushrooms," which are known to produce psychotropic effects from the primary ingredients psilocybin and psilocin, for the purpose of this article, we will be discussing other varietals - to include Inonotus obliquus, otherwise known as Chaga, Lingzhi, otherwise known as Reishi and Lentinula edodesm otherwise known as shiitake. In part one, we will discuss the medicinal benefits of Chaga mushroom. 

The Origins of Chaga

Featured in Alexandr Solzhenitsyn's 1967 novel, Cancer Ward, Chaga use has been noted as early as 16th century Russia.  Chaga mushrooms mainly grow on the bark of birch trees in cold climates, to include Siberia and parts of Asia, where use of Chaga for immunity has been documented for centuries. In only more recent years, Chaga mushrooms have gained popularity in the Western hemisphere  for their health benefits.

Though ongoing, research has shown that Chaga can promote the formation of beneficial cytokines - specialized proteins that help to regulate the immune system - while helping to prevent the production of harmful cytokines, which trigger inflammation and gut damage. 

Additional animal & test-tube studies show that Chaga can prevent and slow cancer growth, by reducing tumor size by as much as 60 %.  Chaga extract also reduced blood sugar levels in obese, diabetic mice, according to a recent study.  In an 8 week study in rats with high cholesterol, Chaga extract reduced "bad" LDL cholesterol & triglycerides, and simultaneously increased antioxidant levels. ​

To sum it up, some of the purported health benefits of Chaga include:
  • decreased inflammation 
  • white blood cell stimulation, to fight off harmful bacteria or viruses
  • tumor reduction (in mice with cancer)
  • blood sugar reduction
  • increased antioxidant levels 

Although Chaga can decrease blood sugar levels, talk to your doctor if you are on insulin. If you have any autoimmune conditions, talk to your doctor before adding Chaga as a supplement.  Because there is no research on the health benefits of Chaga for pregnant women, avoid use entirely during this time.

We live in a world  where most of us don´t take enough time for ourselves, never mind our eating habits. Thus, many of us face the effects of a poor diet like feeling tired most of the time, with low levels of natural drive The good news is you can make easy changes to your daily routine to avoid feeling like that. In this article, we will explore 5 essential daily habits for optimum health. 

You might ask yourself why you should turn these simple steps into habits? Because success depends upon solid habits! How long does it take to create a habit? Science tells us it takes about 21 days to create a new habit, though of course, it can vary from person to person.*

Improving my eating habits has had a tremendous effect on my mood, energy and drive. Since I've transitioned to veganism, I aim to inspire others to incorporate positive changes in their life to achieve optimum health. THE TOP 5 HEALTHY HABITS TO ADD INTO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE - STARTING TODAY!

1. Drink 1-3 cups of water every day after you wake up in the morning! In my opinion, this is the easiest to do right away since you don´t need any preparation time. Drinking water right after waking up speeds up your metabolism and rehydrates your body since you lost some water during the night due to sweating. Our bodies consist of 65% water so they require lots of it (at least 8 cups a day) to work optimally. 

2. Eat 1-2 handful of nuts every day! You don´t need to implement this habit early in the morning but you should implement it at some point throughout your day! Nuts are high in many phytonutrients like zinc, magnesium, potassium, and provide essential fatty acids that your body cannot produce on his own (like omega 3!) Omega 3 is essential for a healthy heart and healthy brain, and both organs are essential for a healthy life! According to research nut consumption appears to reduce the risk of stroke and can lower the risks of dying prematurely!* If you're allergic to nuts, don't worry. You can get Omega 3's from other food sources like fish (such as salmon and sardines) and seeds (like Chia and Flax.)*

3. Eat your fruits & veggies! This is probably an obvious one but like your mom used to say when you were young, "Eat your vegetables to grow strong and healthy!" As a guideline, per day consume 2-4 servings of fruits, 2-3 servings of dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli or kale and as much of the other vegetables you like e.g. bell peppers, carrots, zucchini...

4. Eat more whole foods instead of processed foods! I promote a healthy vegan diet comprised of WHOLE FOODS. That may mean to you that you choose baked potatoes over fries or that you eat a self-made vegan lentil burger instead of some store-bought vegan meat replacement or some veggie burger at McDonald´s. The better the options you choose the better you will look and feel. 

5. The last one is exercise! The beauty of exercise is that it comes in many forms. Personally, I go to the gym on a regular basis and train every muscle group with progressive overload in order to make some VEGAN GAINS! If that doesn't appeal to you, add a long walk (with your pup or alone) to your daily routine. No matter what you do, just aim to stay as active as possible. Remember, exercise is not just useful for burning calories; it has a ton of other benefits including improving your cardiovascular health and endurance.

Become a Lean Workout Machine with this 100% Clean Protein

​I've tried tons of protein-based supplemental foods...bars, shakes, powders, even protein-infused water! I workout on average 5x a week and don't eat a lot of high-protein foods (like meat) so I need high-protein  supplements like these to keep me satiated and fuel muscle repair.

As existing brands have improved their protein formulas and new brands have entered the protein space touting better flavors, I've found a few brands that make protein products I'm satisfied with over the years. Still, it feels like even the protein products I like have their pitfalls; either they contain too much sugar or they have a strange, cardboard like texture. Sometimes, even the bars labeled with words like "natural" and "organic" contain unnecessary fillers, chemicals, or sugar alcohol, so I'm always on the hunt for a clean, delicious-tasting alternative. 

Scrolling from our Instagram (@thecleanmethod) I came across a company that claimed to have created the "cleanest" vegan protein powder. With a description like this, I had to get my hands on it and give it a try! After some back and forth DM'ing with the company, named Pure Charge Nutrition, they were kind enough to send me two blends to test: Dark Cocoa and Vanilla Bean. What I immediately loved about Pure Charge Nutrition was their passion for their clean protein products, and the fact that they made it clear that they were seeking an honest, no BS review!

Upon receipt of the two 100% plant-based proteins, one thing on their packaging stood out to me immediately: you could count the ingredients in each formula on one hand -- literally! If you're a fit foodie like me that's obsessed with finding products that are made as close to nature as possible, you know they're incredibly rare. But PCN Protein Powders might have just made the cut.

​Here's what was in both formulas:
  • A proprietary protein blend (consisting of two plant-based ingredients: Pea Protein & Organic Brown Rice Protein)
  • Natural Flavors
  • Stevia Extract 

Plus, both formulas (Dark Cocoa and Vanilla Bean) have 21 grams of protein and 0 grams of sugar!

That's it! The only difference between the Dark Cocoa and Vanilla Bean flavored protein powder formulas was one ingredient: the Organic Alkalized Cocoa Powder found in the former. 

In addition to the minimal ingredients, these protein powders met all of the other "clean" criteria we use to evaluate products. They're all-natural, non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, diary-free, soy-free and hypoallergenic, making either flavor fitting for paleo, vegans, gluten-free foodies or anyone with common food sensitivities and allergies following a strict or restrictive diet. Their ingredients were free from artificial additives, colors, sweeteners, sugars, bulking agents, stabilizers, emulsifiers and fillers.  In addition to their clean ingredients, both formulas contain complete Amino Acid profiles, which are necessary for your body to actually rebuild protein and repair muscles following a workout. 

Even though I was thrilled with the minimal amount of ingredients, I wondered if the protein powders would taste good as a result. After all, how good can pretty simply made protein taste? 

Apparently - delicious!

I tried tried PCN Vanilla Bean Plant Protein first and I was totally satisfied with the flavor! It could have passed for vanilla ice cream, without the chalky texture that I find in so many other protein powders and even bars. (I did, however, take the company's suggestion and mix the powder with 4 oz water and 3 oz unsweetened non-dairy milk - in my case, pea milk - to ensure a smooth texture.) Per usual, I also added some greens and fruit to my smoothie.  I loved that these extra ingredients didn't kill the protein's natural Vanilla flavor. I had my smoothie first thing in the morning, about 2 hours before I hit the gym, and the combination of nutrients and Amino Acid building clean protein gave me the perfect, healthy energy boost to start my day. I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't feel bloated after sipping my PCN Vanilla Bean Plant Protein smoothie, especially because I combined fruit and veggies with the protein. That's likely because PCN intentionally created an easily digestible formula with a high thermic effect. 

I'm not a huge chocolate fan but I really enjoyed the Dark Cocoa protein powder that I incorporated into my smoothie the next day as a snack, about 30 minutes after my workout. (Aside from first thing in the morning and before bed, a great time to have your smoothie is after a workout to spark muscle recovery.) I didn't add any veggies or fruit to this one (with the exception of a banana -- and some Chia seeds that I usually add for Omega 3s) because I thought that might interact with the flavor. As I was taking one level scoop from the tub, I noticed that the protein was super high in iron (180%, as was the Vanilla flavor, to be exact.) This makes sense for plant-based consumers, like vegans, interested in Pure Charge Nutrition's protein powders, because vegans can be at risk for iron-deficiency anemia. This is because the type of iron that is easily consumed by the body (Heme iron) is found in the animal products that vegans avoid.

What Beauty Hides – Why Everyone Should Be Aware of Invisible Illness

September is Pain Awareness Month, and it is a very important time for those of us living with invisible illness. What is invisible illness? It is a condition that shows little or no outward signs, thereby rendering it invisible to others.

Because of this invisibility, it is often very difficult, if not impossible, for those of us living with chronic illnesses to be taken seriously.

After all, we look healthy and attractive, so what could be wrong?

Let me tell you what beauty hides, and why everyone should be aware of invisible illness.

The Sobering Statistics of Chronic Pain

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCI), nearly 50 million American adults have significant chronic pain or severe pain.

I Told You I Was Sick - My Story

I grew up in the 1980s, where there was a very clear line between what was considered “healthy” and what was considered “sick”. If you were sick, you were bedridden, had an obvious mobility device, or you were unable to see, hear, or speak.

If you weren’t sick, you were everybody else.

That’s how it was. Cut and dry. Black and white.

When I started having chronic stomach pain, uncontrollable diarrhea, frequent ear, nose, and throat infections, muscle pain, fatigue, and learning disabilities at the age of seven, you would think I would be considered sick enough to be taken seriously.

Well, I was. That is until the doctors could find nothing wrong with me. The conclusion that followed? I was making it all up in my head to get attention.

From then on, any health complaint I made was met with suspicion, anger, and even punishment. I was still taken to doctors regularly, but, I didn’t test positive for anything, so it only cemented the idea that my illnesses were somehow figments of my imagination.

When I moved out on my own at 17, I went to doctor after doctor after doctor, not caring who believed me or didn’t. I was absolutely, 100 percent determined to get a diagnosis. I knew I was sick, and I knew it wasn’t in my head.

In 2002, a naturopathic physician finally proved me right. At the time, I was down to 90 pounds, my hair was falling out, I had zero energy, and my skin was ashen. I was quite literally dying, and still, nobody believed I was really sick.

The naturopathic physician took one look at me and said, “Food is killing you.” He put me on an elimination diet and tested me for food and environmental allergies. I tested positive for so many things, it shocked him.

He also told me I had a very low platelet count (later diagnosed as ITP, an autoimmune disorder that causes your immune system to destroy your platelets). Platelets are responsible for clotting your blood, and my counts were far below normal.

From the elimination diet, I learned that I am incredibly intolerant to gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye, and, if I eat even a small amount of it, my immune system starts attacking my digestive system and central nervous system.

Since not much was known about gluten intolerance in 2002, I had to do all of my own research online. When I told my family, who had doubted me for years, “I told you I was sick”, not only did they not drop to their knees and beg for forgiveness (OK, I know that never would have really happened), they STILL didn’t believe me!

I was told I had found celiac disease on the Internet and was just pretending to have it. It was even suggested that I had an eating disorder. Meanwhile, my platelet count continued to drop. Normal is within the 150,000 to 450,000 range. Mine would range anywhere from 40,000 to 70,000.

People not believing me never stopped me from following a strict gluten-free diet, even back in a time when I had to take food with me wherever I went. Family and friends got angry and insulted that I wouldn’t eat what they provided, but I didn’t care.

By 22, I was honestly too exhausted from fighting both my own body and with others about my authenticity, that I just let people think whatever they wanted.

In 2008, I figured out why I didn’t care about conforming to social norms, and, unlike others I knew, was never even tempted to bow to the pressure of “eating normally”.

I’m autistic. I read the books. I joined the forums. I did the tests. I presented my case to my family. Nope. Still making it all up for attention. I couldn’t possibly be autistic because I could carry on a conversation and look people in the eye. (Headdesk.)

Well, autism presents much differently in girls than it does in boys. We are expert social mimics, so it’s hard to catch on with us.

It wasn’t until 2014 that I finally had a complete nervous breakdown. It doesn’t surprise me in the least. I’m just amazed at how long I lasted without losing my mind.

In 2015, I received my official diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome, along with PTSD, OCD, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Finally, after all these years, I am both validated and protected by my diagnoses. Now, I’ve dedicated my life to helping others going through similar situations.  

What Beauty Hides – Why Sick Doesn’t Look Sick

In the media, we are only exposed to four different versions of sick: Colds and flu, accident recovery, disability (where a visible assistive device is used), and dying. That’s it. That’s “sick” in Hollywood.

What the media doesn’t tell you is that there are not four kinds of sick. There are thousands. People living with invisible illnesses such as celiac disease, ITP, OCD, PTSD, TBI, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, lupus, arthritis, diabetes, etc., do not look sick.

As a matter of fact, we can look perfectly healthy when we have the energy to put in the effort. We could be in agony on the inside, but, most of the time, you would never know it to look at us.

When we are in a flare, meaning our symptoms are at their worst, you may notice some outward signs such as extreme fatigue, glassy eyes, mental confusion, or a pinched expression on the face, but we usually find a place to hide before this happens.

We don’t like to flare in public. Too many of us have been told to “knock it off” in the middle of a painful and uncontrollable flare in the past. It’s just too traumatic and vulnerable for us, so we’re very careful what we show to the outside world.

Which, of course, can be to our detriment, since, if we don’t look sick, people think we can’t possibly be sick!

The struggle is real. Very real.

When the flare calms down, this doesn’t mean the illness goes away. It just goes back to being invisible.

It Takes Work to Appear Healthy

We want to live just like you do. We want to get up, dress up, show up, have fun, do errands, work, and interact with others…so, if and when we can, that’s EXACTLY what we do!

We take a nap, down some pain pills, slap on a coat or two of makeup, gulp back an energy drink, and get out there into the world. We may look as healthy as the next person in those moments, but that day or night out is going to cost us in ways you’ll never see.

Meanwhile, since most people see us in our best moments (and that’s when we take most of the photos we post on social media) the healthy members of society think we must be exaggerating or outright making up our conditions.

Put Yourself in Our Shoes

Imagine if you were sick and nobody believed you because you looked healthy. Imagine how isolating and strange and frightening that would be.

Right now, try to picture what it would be like for the people you rely on the most to not only abandon you, but treat you like a sneaky, attention-starved liar.

Many people with chronic illnesses say that the most devastating part of their illness isn’t the condition itself, but how often they are dismissed, mistreated, and invalidated in their everyday lives.

Invalidation is erasure.

It’s like being told over and over again, “You do not exist.” Despite our myriad symptoms and diagnoses, we STILL sometimes doubt our own sanity because we’re still treated like drug-seeking liars!

After all, many of us have never been healthy, so we have absolutely no idea what to check ourselves against. Doubt happens, even among those of us with the most debilitating conditions.

Every Month Should Be Pain Awareness Month

Every month should be pain awareness month because chronic pain is everywhere. It doesn’t discriminate based on age, social status, religion, gender, or creed, and it can happen to you or someone you love at any time.

You never, EVER know what’s going on with a person on the inside. No matter how “perfect” their lives look on social media or when you see them out and about, you are only getting a brief snapshot of their lives.

Be aware. Be kind. If someone tells you they’re sick, believe them. It really is that simple. If we could only do this one thing, the world would be a much better place.

Don’t let “beauty” fool you. After all, it is only in the eye of the beholder.

Climate change matters.

Not just for the preservation of our beautiful Earth, but for the preservation of our people.

Climate change and its damaging effects are rooted in science, not subjectivity.

If we care about the health of our generation and those to come, we need to make a stance to curb climate change. This includes holding the current administration accountable for decisions made to slash funding to important agencies like the EPA, whose mission is to protect our environment and health. 

We cannot have healthy people without a healthy environment. 
We cannot have a healthy environment without healthy people.

Climate change factors such as extreme temperatures, poor air quality, natural disasters, water contamination and changes in infectious agents pose a direct threat to our health, including the increase of:
  • heat-related death and illness
  • worsened chronic conditions (such as cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease)
  • hospital admissions (due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures)
  • allergic reactions
  • asthmatic episodes
  • death and injury resulting from extreme events / natural disasters
  • economic devastation
  • vector-borne diseases, transmitted by mosquitoes, fleas and ticks
  • water-related illnesses due to water contamination

These are just some of the risks posed to our health as a result of the devastating implications of climate change. The good news is each and every one of us can make a difference.
