Padmasana (Lotus pose)

How to do:

Sit comfortably cross-legged with spine straight and palms facing up and rest on thighs, just above your knees.

Benefits:

Quiets mind
Opens uphips
Increases attention & awareness
Eases menstrual discomfort and sciatica
Ensures flexible joints and ligaments

Balasana (Child’s pose)

How to do:

Kneel on the floor, resting buttocks on heels, and fold over your legs with a lengthened torso and neck. Extend arms in front of you, and if you can, touch your forehead to the floor. You can also do this with hips open.

Benefits:

Gently stretches ankles, thighs, knees
Opens hips
Relieves stress and fatigue
Calms mind (Balasana is a resting pose)
Relieves back and neck pain
Strengthens the entire upper body

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-facing dog)

How to do:

Begin in mountain pose, or standing upright. Fold body, forward over the hips, placing palms on the floor in front of you. (Bend needs if you have to.) Extend one foot back in an elongated lunge, pressing palms firmly into mat. Step the other foot back to meet the other leg back, lifting hips in the process. You might have to walk feet in a little so you can completely unbend knees.

Benefits:

Simultaneously calms the brain, but energizes body
Relieves stress and mild depression
Stretches: shoulders, hamstrings, calves, arches, and hands
Relieves symptoms of menstruation and menopause
Prevents osteoporosis
Strengthens arms & legs

Salamba Sirasana (Supported Handstand)

How to do:

Kneel on floor. Place arms out in front of you and create an oval shape. Use hands to cup head on floor and straighten legs, lifting up hips in the process. Walk legs forward as close to body as possible then lift one leg up, before the other. Feel free to play with the position of your legs in this posture, as I have in the image below.

Benefits:

Assists in minor back & neck injuries
Reduces headache
Lowers blood pressure
Aids in menstrual symptoms

Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend)

How to do:

Begin standing upright in Mountain Pose (or Tadasana.) Place hands on hips and exhale, bending forward from your hips first,  and placing your fingertips or palms (whichever your body allows) on the floor in front of you. Straighten your knees if you can, pressing your heels into the floor while maintaining an elongated torso.

Benefits:

Calms the mind & alleviates anxiety
Fights stress and mild depression
Reduces tiredness
Stimulates liver and kidneys
Improves digestion
Relieves headaches
Combats insomnia
Fights menopausal symptoms
